PS: This is a female
You can tell from the gradually-tapered abdomen (i.e. ovipositor). The abdomen is conspicuously truncate in males of Stylogaster.

(BTW, We don't have any images of a male S. biannulata yet...maybe you'll find one next time? :-)

Hovering orientation
Steve, does this really capture the orientation you observed?

I'd expect the heavier hind legs to dangle downwards (rather than horizontally backwards), and the head and abdomen to be more closely aligned with the horizontal than they appear above.

I wonder if you meant to post this image rotated by 90° clockwise? (Unless it was flying downward, rather than hovering.) If not, that truly is a bizarre orientation for hovering...would take a lot of strength & energy to constantly hold those legs up, against the influence of gravity
