Common Buckeye - Junonia coenia - male

Common Buckeye - Junonia coenia - Male
Sandhills Game Lands, Richmond County, North Carolina, USA
October 14, 2005
Yes, we have plenty of images of this species, but perhaps some will enjoy this one. There were several Buckeyes, plus a Painted Lady and American Lady, enjoying a salt sip on the sand of this road. Presumably these were males, as they are prone to look for salts. This one Buckeye allowed close approach, and I took about 20 photos. In this one the light was at just the right angle to highlight the wing venation and the hairiness of the abdomen.
