Polygonus leo (Gmelin, [1790])
45-50mm wingspan
Dorsal, blackish with several large square white spots, and a stubby tail.
Underwing, light purplish with 2 dark bands. A black dot near the wing base of the HW is diagnostic.
CA-TX, FL / W. Indies - Map (MPG)
Hardwood hammocks, gardens, and rimrock pinelands.
Multiple broods, flies year round.
Jamaican dogwood and pongam.
Has a short rapid flight, often landing under a leaf, hanging upside down.
