Ladybird Beetle - Harmonia axyridis

Ladybird Beetle - Harmonia axyridis
Amherst, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
April 19, 2004
Found this Ladybird climbing up our wall, I've seen several with this spot pattern in the last week or so. Possibly an Asian Ladybird...

You got it, the multicolored Asian lady beetle. Number and size of spots is variable. Pronotal (top of thorax) markings in black and white are pretty constant.

This is not Harmonia axyridis
Harmonia axyridis (Asian Lady beetle) has a very distinct marking on the pronotum shaped like a "W" (or an M, depending on which way you look at it). Color and spots on the elytra are quite variable, but the markings on the pronotum are always alike. I'm not sure what type of lady beetle this is.

Harmonia axyridis
diagree - the W or M is common but not 100% present. see the BugGuide species info page and this plate, especially row 3.
