Fire Ant? - Brachyponera chinensis

Fire Ant? - Brachyponera chinensis
Newport News, Virginia, USA
October 18, 2005
Size: Approx. 0.5 cm.
Can anyone tell me if this is a species of fire ant? The bites/stings are very painful (have a strong burning sensation) and in some cases swell up to the size of a quarter and itch for days afterwards. Any help with ID is appreciated!

Moved from Ponerinae.

Ponerinae.
Ah, would pay me to read the entire commentary:-) The sting cinches it. This is a ponerine ant. Fire ants do not get that large, and they have two nodes ("humps") between the thorax and abdomen. Ponerines tend to have one large node as this individual does, and they have vicious stings. Get well soon.
