This genus includes 29 described species and probably hundreds of undescribed species, primarily from the Neotropics. 3 species are known from the US and Canada - P. palliceps (ON to TX and FL), P. portalense (AZ to Costa Rica), and P. aquatile (FL and the Dominican Republic) (Smith and Marshall 2004).
