Cloudless Sulphur (Phoebis sennae) chrysalides and emerged adult butterfly - Phoebis sennae - Female

Did you happen to see the top of this critter?
This looks suspiciously like a male Orange-barred Sulphur to me.

Cloudless Sulphur it is
Hi,

I reared about one dozen of these. It is a Cloudless Sulphur. The topside is pure yellow (on the males, anyway). Do Orange-barred Sulphurs occur in Southern California?

Orange-barred Sulphurs
are in southern California, and there have been quite a few reports in the last few years.

I wonder if these California Cloudless are different subspecies from even the ones in Arizona and New Mexico. I'll look into it. Maybe they come north from Baja California? I've never personally seen markings this crisp and dark on them before.

Whatever the case, they are beautiful.

Was this one female?

There is another here from Tennessee that looks similar.

Nice images.
These are tough for me to chase and shoot. You certainly benefitted from growing your own - very fine specimen!
