Sunflower Maggot Fly, Strauzia longipennis - Strauzia longipennis - female

Sunflower Maggot Fly, Strauzia longipennis - Strauzia longipennis - Female
Evanston 60202, Cook County, Illinois, USA
May 5, 2009
Size: 1/4 inch
This species considers the sunflower it inhabits as its "home". That is, when you frighten it off the plant, it immediately returns, often landing on the same or a near by leaf. This provides an extended photographic opportunity and I followed this specimen for about 45 minutes, taking many photos. It prefers being on the underside of leaves so it is sometimes difficult to get good photographs, but persistence prevailed in this case.

Moved from Strauzia. I can not see one of the key characters in Foote(1) but host plant should resolve the question.
