European Ground Beetle - Carabus nemoralis

European Ground Beetle - Carabus nemoralis
Bend, Deschutes County, Oregon, USA
July 24, 2009
Size: 1"
This beetle was found in a small rock garden near the house. Like similar beetles of its size, it raises it abdomen when threatened. I thought the the shield-shaped thorax was quite distinctive and scarab-like.
