Not Salebius- Omissophagus tsoodzilianus Esser - Omissophagus tsoodzilianus - male

Not Salebius- Omissophagus tsoodzilianus Esser - Omissophagus tsoodzilianus - Male
Mt. Taylor, Cibola County, New Mexico, USA
August 23, 1997
Size: 2.1 mm
Is this Salebius? Leschen says the pronotum should have three undulations. Instead it has three rather straight sections divided by (sort of) bifid teeth. The only southwestern Salebius would be S. hirsutus Dajoz 1988. Anyone able to confirm? I find lots of these at UV light or on trees in NM.
No.
This specimen and a series of the same were sent to Jens Esser. He has described a new genus and two new species in the genus. This is now named Omissophagus tsoodzilianus (the species name is derived from the Navaho name for Mt Taylor where this was found.)

Moved from Salebius.

From discussion in Requests forum, Rick states:

"In Cryptophagidae, I placed photos of a specimen under Salebius, because that was how it keyed, but I knew something was wrong. Now 10 years later, Jens Esser has used several series of these to describe a new genus and two new species. We need a new genus page Omissophagus and a species page Omissophagus tsoodzilianus for the two pictures. Hopefully I can photograph one of the other species in the genus and add it later.

...

This genus is quite close to Cryptophagus and Salebius thus:
Cryptophagidae/Cryptophaginae/Cryptophagini/Omissophagus"

i'll show this nice beetle around

Rich Leschen: "I would just say Salebius sp.:
"...the types of the Salebius need to be checked, and Dajoz species may, more than likely, be a synonym..."
