I found this in a maple tree while walking through my yard tonight. It was about 8 to 9 feet above the ground. It was getting dark, so I brought it in to take the photograph. I took it back outside and re-hung it in the natural temperature to avoid upsetting its life cycle. Is it a cecropia cocoon?

it
sure looks like a haylophora coccon to me..and since the other haylophora you have there..h colombia doesnt show as eating on maple id say yes. you probably called it right..also the size much bigger than my eurys or h colombia gloveri.. great find..keep an eye on it in the spring..

I agree with cecropia
The size really rules out anything else, and the way the cocoon is attached along its full length (more or less) is characteristic.
