Aphid - Aphis fabae

Aphid - Aphis fabae
Alameda County, California, USA
November 15, 2009
Size: ~0.08 in., 2 mm
Walking on wooden garden structure. A poor image, added because the less common aphids are sketchily represented.

Diagnostic criterion
Thanks to your new guide page, I know how to identify these aphids now. This species is the one that always faces to the right.

Are there
poplars nearby, by any chance?
...Never mind, I guess this is the species that lives on your chard:

I guess it is!
They do look alike. The species with white dots is far less numerous on the chard (or anywhere else here) than a plain black species with a teardrop shape. I'll try to get a better photo now that I've benefited from JRM's tutorials in the photography forum.
