Mystery Bug - Scarites subterraneus

Mystery Bug - Scarites subterraneus
Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA
November 10, 2009
Size: 17mm
Feisty creature that I caught zipping around my finished basement. The basement is mostly insect-free, except for the occasional spider, and two of these things. What is it? The shell says "beetle" to me.

Scarites subterraneus, i would say
this is a ground beetle, an accidental visitor

Species Scarites subterraneus
Species Scarites subterraneus - Big-headed Ground Beetle? Wow, Thanks. I found similar pictures using your identification. I was initially afraid that I was looking at a monster termite. I'll let the big guy go to terrorize other insects now.
