(I'm trying out a new way of IDing, bare with me please, Debbi, lol. I'm not sure how long it will last, as it requires a lot of typing)

Location fits, near northern & central CA
Habitat is perfect; oak grassland, riparian, coniferous forests, occasionally seen in urban areas.
Size fits, 16-30mm.
Color fits, golden brown or dark gray.
Carapace fits, deep transverse fovea; cervical groove; caput slightly elevated; hairy and sub-rectangular.
Eyes fit, clustered on low central mound (but a close up of them would help better ID it).
(I wish we could see the chelicerae as there are some teeth and denticles that would help ID)
Legs are a good fit, densely hairy, w/ numerous spines (but closer looks would help to ID more accurately, i.e. tarsi w/ 3 claws, lower half of front legs scopulate, males have a mesoapical process).
Abdomen oval & densely hairy w/ no dorsal tergites (what about ventral though?), fits.
Can't see spinnerets right up close, but they seem to be reminiscent of Calisoga (4 of them; PMS short w/only one segment, PLS very long w/ 3 subequal segments).
Genitalia: (no gonopore or palp photos? phooey.)

...and my personal observation of its habitus would be that yes, it strongly resembles a Calisoga (but I am no Mygalomorph expert, that's for sure).

Thanks, that's really helpful (I know some of the terminology, but a lot of it I don't--and after a certain amount of reading a lot of words I don't know the meaning of, my eyes start to glaze over :-) ). I guess I'm going to have to start bagging what I find, if I can do it without destroying their homes.

Haha, I think I've decided that might not be the best way to ID. Lol! It is very tedious - always having to reference a glossary and such. I guess it depends how precise you like your ID's...and if you like very precise, you might have to bag 'em like you mentioned. I really do think yours is a Calisoga like you thought, though. And thank you for the close-up photos...as I could see the eyes better and from what I can tell, they match for Calisoga. Picking the gender would involve a few more close-ups...and if you would like to do that, let me know. I have no problem with letting you know what to look for (I always have my keys handy).
