Fairly large fly. I thought it was a syrphid but could not find any looking quite the same.

i'm by no means an expert, but check Pterallastes thoracicus
looks like a good match to me:

The Field Guide to the Syrphidae of Northeastern North America shows that Pterallastes thoracicus has not been recorded in Ontario so it would be kind of neat to have found one.
