Aphid eater on milkweed. Puparium - Eupeodes

Aphid eater on milkweed. Puparium - Eupeodes
Schuylkill Nature Center, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
November 18, 2009
Size: 8 mm
It pupated yesterday. From now on I am keeping it indoors because I want to see the adult for ID purposes. I don't know if syrphids overwinter as larvae or puparia and don't want to take that chance.
Update: apparently many syrphids overwinter as larvae. However it is possible to find adults in February (in the Washington DC area).

Moved from American Hover Fly.

Lovely puparium
and nice job with the close-ups of the larval cuticles. Thanks for sharing.
