Pregnant? - Dysdera crocata - female

Pregnant? - Dysdera crocata - Female
Campbell County, Kentucky, USA
November 18, 2009
Size: 1.0 cm
My guess is a female Woodlouse Hunter. (I received an inexpensive macro lens filter add-on for my Nikon but the results are disappointing. Point me to a forum for bug photography if you can. )

You guessed right :)
'Tis a Dysdera, or Woodlouse Hunter. From what I can see of the palps, yes, it's a she. Females have a swollen gonopore region, too (another way to tell gender). The small grouping of six eyes, the porrect (forward extending) chelicerae, and the coloration are all good indicators of the Dysdera genus...and as far as I know, the only species is crocata. So this is a Dysdera crocata.

Check out Basic Macro Photography.
I don't know how advanced you are at photography, so forgive me if this site is below your level of ability...but I was introduced to this cool site by Gayle and Jeanell Strickland (also members of BG) and with their help and the help of that site, I now have a styrofoam bowl flash diffuser that helps soooo much with my macro photos...(although my photos are still suffering from the 'point and shoot camera' sickness, lol).

A clarification...
In the above comment I mentioned that the only species is crocata. I want to make sure and elaborate on that before somebody asks about it. There is, in fact, only one nearctic species, which is the crocata I was referring to. There are other species that occur in other parts of the world, but I am not at all familiar with any of those.
