Drain Fly / Moth Fly - Clogmia albipunctata

Drain Fly / Moth Fly - Clogmia albipunctata
Churchill Woods Forest Preserve, DuPage County, Illinois, USA
August 14, 2005
Size: 5mm
This is one of those small black "flies" you'll see around a floor drain in a basement or somewhere there is no trap. I always thought they were flies, and I know you can control them by pouring household bleach down the drain once in awhile.. but now that I've photographed them, they look like.. moths? I dunno. I found this specimen in an outhouse. EEW! Gross! What the heck are they?

Is this your image or theirs?

Yes
Yes to both.

drain fly
Every fall when the weather turns cooler, we get infested with drain flies. Can anyone tell me why this occurs in the fall? I have found a product called DF 5000, that works to eliminate them by disolving their food source. I just wondered why we only see them in the fall months.

Drain Fly control
Yes, definitely a drain fly. My company has found that household bleach will actually do very little to their numbers. A better way to get rid of the problem is to eliminate the sludge that forms on the inside of every drain with a stiff brush and/or bacterial sludge eater. They breed in the sludge and the best way to make sure they don't come back is to make sure they have nowhere to live.

You're right, it's a Moth Fly
Here's a page in the guide for Moth Fly.
