tiny cyst-like leaf galls on bur oak - Neuroterus saltarius

tiny cyst-like leaf galls on bur oak - Neuroterus saltarius
Ackworth, Warren County, Iowa, USA
November 21, 2009
Size: 1 mm
Very numerous, tiny, cyst-like galls on blade between major veins on lower surface of fallen leaf of bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) in rural yard. Common on many bur oak leaves piled along fence by wind. Most of the cysts had fallen out of this weathered leaf (leaving small pits), but some still remained. Most of them had holes, presumably exits; a few still appeared intact.

Moved
Moved from Gall Wasps. I happened to spot a photo of these in (1) while I was looking for something else. Based on the life cycle / phenology information I put on the guide page, I suspect that the galls that remained attached to the leaf had been parasitized, and that the exit holes were those of the parasitoids.
