that's okay: you can never predict what angle/detail it takes to ensure identification of a particular beetle. that's why many people stick to leps but i would hate it if you would!
among the aphodiines, the most suggestive details to get to species are the head (the outline, convexity, surface finish & relief) and pronotal surface; to get to genera, [meta]tibial ridges/spurs are often all-important. i'm sayng all this not for you to memorize but to show you how @#$% complicated it gets with beetles. but you're doing fine, man. =v=
