Hermit crab - Pagurus longicarpus

Hermit crab - Pagurus longicarpus
Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA
June 2, 2008

Moved
Moved from Paguridae. Tentative move. See this Texas Parks and Wildlife Department site. The image here fits the description and none of the other common Pagurids in the area fit. I can't yet rule out a rare, obscure species but I'm fairly confident of this ID.

Moved from Hermit Crabs.

Definitely Paguridae
I strongly suspect Pagurus longicarpus but have been unable to find a definitive list of local Pagurus species (or a key to them). Of the most common Woods Hole area hermits, at least, P. longicarpus is the only possibility. (It isn't P. annulipes or P. pollicaris.)
