oil beetle - Meloe campanicollis

oil beetle - Meloe campanicollis
Manhattan, Riley County, Kansas, USA
November 21, 2009
Size: approx 1.5 inches
My daughter took these pics and asked if I knew what the critter was. I was pretty sure it was a rove beetle (but I guess I was wrong!), but not much more than that. She said it was in the leaves when first found, and the color was a deep green. The orange liquid was exuded from its joints when it was disturbed, apparently. I've no idea how that liquid ended up on its head...

from John Pinto: "Pretty sure it's M. campanicollis.
"Nice record -- I've never seen any Kansas specimens."

[So, Dave-- pls thank & congratulate your daughter, tell her she's made a contribution to science! =v=]

Moved from ID Request.
