First described in 1878 by Cyrus Thomas as Siphonophora acerifoliae
Explanation of Names
acerifoliae is probably from Latin acer- "maple" + folium- "leaf", meaning "of maple leaves"- but the ending seems to be wrong
Range
Throughout the United States, also Canada. It has been introduced into Europe.
Food
On maple spp. (Acer), mostly on silver maple (A. saccharinum) (See here)
