Aphid eater on milkweed. It is another boy! -
Eupeodes
-
Schuylkill Nature Center, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
Size: 10 mm
Ventral view. It looks quite different from the
Syrphus
that I raised last year.

Have you considered Epistrope?
Sometimes I can figure those out, but not here. What I look for is a mottled effect - sort of "marbleized" on the light stripes atop the abdomen. That said, my best guess here is Eupeodes, though I'm far from certain. (I believe your "not Syrphus" call is right on target.)

I'll get more shots
The crazy thing continues to be too frisky, although it spent the night in the fridge. I added a close-up of the abdomen.
So far, what I see is that the black marks on the ventral area of the abdomen are similar to those of the one IDed as
Eupeodes
and very different from
Syrphus
. I don't know if this has any taxonomic significance.
The larva of
Epistrophe
looks quite different from this one.
