springtail mating frenzy? - Hypogastrura - male - female

springtail mating frenzy? - Hypogastrura - Male Female
Cedar Rapids/ICNC, Linn County, Iowa, USA
November 28, 2009
Size: 1mm
Several masses of what I assume are Collembola were found in very shallow water, edges of a small pond, each mass must have had several thousand, any idea on these? They seemed to float on the water without breaking the surface tension, "hopped" when disturbed.

Moved

Hypogastrura sp.
Hypogastruridae are known to form mass aggregations typically for replication purposes.

Moved
Moved from ID Request. There are at least two superficially similar species (sometimes) found on water. They are quite distant in evolutionary terms, but superficially similar.
