What kind of spider is this? - Araneus diadematus

Orb Weaver

This is an orb weaver, of the genus Araneus, and is a female. Im not sure of the speices,someone might be able to tell you, but its unlikely, apparently you need a close look at the genitalia for a species ID. These spiders are completely harmelss to humans, and will only bite if EXTREMELY provoked (i.e. youre holding it and sticking your finger in its face) I believe they are completely nocturnal which explains your only seeing her at night, and are amazing at controlling annoying insects such as mosquitoes. Treat her well and shell be a joy to have around and watch.

Araneus diadematus - Cross Spider

Everything Kyle said is correct. This beautiful little spider, however, happens to be one of the very few visually identifiable Araneus sp. spiders. :) This is a female Cross Spider (Araneus diadematus). It is much more evident in the other photo; the markings of the top of the abdomen are distinctive.
