I think the tree is a hackberry. These structures were on the underside of some of the leaves.

Hackberry
This is indeed a hackberry. In fact, there are six species of hackberry (Celtis) in Texas, most of them separated by subtle differences in leaf shape. The partially toothed margin and cordate (heart-shaped) base of this one suggests Dwarf Hackberry (C. tenuifolia) (ironically the cordate base is not illustrated on this weblink); if so, it would be a small tree.

Hackberry
Thanks, John and Charley. It may indeed have been a small tree. Next time I'm there, I'll pay more attention. I was mainly focused on things within my reach, so not looking overhead much :-)

Moved from ID Request. Celticecis midge; appears to be an oddly shaped C. unguicula gall.
