Sawfly larvae on rose bush in December - Cladius pectinicornis

Sawfly larvae on rose bush in December - Cladius pectinicornis
Willow Grove, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, USA
December 2, 2009
Size: 4.5-12 mm
Every year this rose bush clings to some leaves until December. They get full of holes, but it never occurred to me to check who was doing the damage.
These sawfly larvae range in size from 4.5 to 12 mm. They have lots of thin hairs. Are they Cladius difformis? And what are they doing in December?

Tenthredinidae
Cladius difformis is correct. They go though multiple generations a year and its not too uncommon to see them late in the fall, even December, if the weather stays warm enough.
