Ochodaeidae...
After a recent (2007?) revision by M. J. Paulsen, there are no longer true Ochodaeus in North America. Would need shots of pygidium and other diagnostic features (which I cannot think of at the top of my head :) for a genus-level ID.

 
Very true!
But in this case the pronotum is modified behind the eyes, mandibles are externally angulate, hindlegs aren't expanded, and there's a horn = Cucochodaeus sparsus. Unfortunately as you've noted, most species aren't this easy to ID with photographs.
