Color
Either this old specimen was discolored by the method of collection and/or storage, or it is due to age. The spots are yellow in life. I have a fairly large series collected in 1972 and, although some have darkened, none approach that deep red-orange color. Or could this be an artifact of photography?

Both
The other image posted of this species shows a truer color. All the specimens available have a similar light orange color. If they are supposed to be yellow then they all must have darkened equally; I'm not sure how they were stored for most of their history.

Is that date really correct?
If so, it looks pretty great for a 70+ year old specimen!

Yep
It's that old. It's from the Chicago Field Museum, they have a very impressive collection of Buprestids. They have Knull's collection, so they have a lot of specimens and a lot of old stuff; most of it is in comparable condition.

such pristine condition...
...is not unusual even in older specimens if properly preserved and protected (mostly from dust, moisture, and pests)

Moved
Moved from Acmaeodera.
