Melyridae - Collops punctatus - female

Melyridae - Collops punctatus - Female
Mt Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa, USA
June 29, 2009
Size: 4 mm
Sweep net of pasture/grassland for the ISU/Iowa DNR Patch, Burn, Graze project.

from Adriean J. Mayor: female Collops punctatus LeConte 1852
his (Dr Mayor's, not LeConte's) comment: "It is very similar to C. nigritus Schaeffer 1912, and probably they are the same species, but punctatus is the senior name. The differences between the two are minor. C. punctatus has a slightly bluish cast to the elytra while C. nigritus is black with no hint of blue. Other characters, shape of male antennae and the genitalia, punctation of the elytra, etc., are pretty much the same in the two. No one has formally synonymized them at this time."

Moved from Collops.

let's keep it here for now; dunno what 'C. punctatus LeC.' is...

must be a slim Collops nigriceps ♀
