This
one is heavily marked, and so I would put it in missa. It is the more lightly/intermediately marked ones that seem to overlap with difficilis.

Don identified this 12mm one as F. missa.

nice picture
palps look like a male and you can see the stigma real good. How long is this one?

I just measured the specimen, and it's 12mm.

FYI - I just ran into 10 Frenesia difficilis males and females that range from 15-18mm with the females being the larger. While several of the wings are spotted along the anterior anastomosis most are not and the spotting is not as distinct as the strip on the photo above.

So it sounds like this probably isn't F. difficilis. I saved it for Don, and I'll be seeing him in a few weeks.

I guess I just have problems with using size and color to determine species because of such variability in both.
