Urophora cardui on goldenrod - Urophora cardui

Urophora cardui on goldenrod - Urophora cardui
Tommy Thompson Park, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
October 6, 2009
Size: ~5mm
I opened this gall three days after I had collected it. This larva doesn't look at all like the expected Eurosta solidaginis larva; it has a dark spiracle plate.
Then I put both gall and larva in a ziplock bag with a moist tissue together with another gall.
About 7 weeks later there were 2 adult females in that bag; most certainly they came form this gall as it is known that they can have several larvae in them; you can see both galls and one fly in the third photo of this series.
However, other galls kept in the same conditions had the expected species inside, that is the goldenrod gall fly,
Eurosta solidaginis, & one of its parasitic wasps Eurytoma, respectively.
