Although 5 mm seems a streach, this is undoubtedly Collops cribrosus LeConte. It is commonly found in coastal beach areas from San Diego north to British Columbia, Canada. It can often be found on beaches or in dune areas behind the beach under wrack and debris. The specimen pictured is very melanistic. Most specimens have the elytra more greenish in color. However, other characters such as the shape of the antennae and the puctation on the elytra match well with typical specimens. A relative with quadrimaculate elytra (red with blue spots), C. crusoe Fall, can be found on the beaches of San Nicholas Island.
