Sawfly larvae on rose bush in December - Cladius pectinicornis

Sawfly larvae on rose bush in December - Cladius pectinicornis
Willow Grove, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, USA
December 10, 2009
Morticia would be proud of me; after decapitating the long stemmed roses I give them to my green, hairy pets to eat.
The sawfly larvae continued to grow; some reaching 12 mm. I lost several, but three spun loose cocoons like this one between a leaf and a stem. The second one built a cocoon between two sheets of paper and the third one a less finished cocoon between two leaves; it got torn out when I separated the leaves.
I first notice this cocoon two days ago, 12/8/09.
