Male Locust Treehopper - Thelia bimaculata - Male
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
August 19, 2005
The small colony I've found is not attended by ants.

Anyhow the male adult has the colorful yellow spots as seen here, while the female does not.

Thelia bimaculata
Nice photos!

It is the nymphs that attract ants, so if the colony is very small or composed mostly of adults, they will probably not be discovered readily by foraging ants.

Thanks, Andy! Didn't realize that about Treehoppers and their nymphs and ants. BugGuide continues to be a great education!
