Erinnyis ello
Tavernier, Monroe County, Florida, USA
December 7, 2009
Size: 2-3 inches
This was a relatively large caterpillar, 2-3" in length, with what looks like an eyespot on dorsal surface rear of head area

but:
as far as i can see i totally agree with ryan..its a sphinx.
the ello sphinx has a very small horn in the last instar (more like a pointy bump)..where aleops has a longer one..both larve greatly resemble this guy..have a peek..

you might want to look at
Erinnyis ello - Ello Sphinx
.
It has that distinctive eyespot and, according to the Guide, its caterpillars are extremely variable, including green and brown/gray forms. One of the distinguishing characteristics is "ornately banded prolegs," which I seem to be just making out at the far left of your image.
At any rate, see what you think until a specialist chimes in.

I agree, this is most likely an
Erinnyis ello
larvae, the brown form. Although I wouldn't completely rule out
E. alope
which has a similar larvae. But it is certainly an
Erinnyis sp.
