Toxomerus Behaviour-Toxomerus marginatus - Toxomerus marginatus - Female
Montrose, Laurens County, Georgia, USA
December 5, 2009
This is more a request for info on behaviour rather than the insect itself. While taking photos of aphids in the bush, I noted this fly hovering about, landing on several places, walking about, then flying off and coming back to a different spot until, finally, she landed on this pack of aphids and was apparently licking them. I was intrigued enough to keep shooting after she left them and the photos clearly show her licking the plant as well. Is her behaviour consistent? I understand she may have been taking a cue from ants and was getting the honeydew from the aphids, but why the plant (which has been established to be prunus)? Sorry if this seems stupid or just idle chit-chat, but I am interested in this behaviour.

Honeydew
Your guess is in the right track. Adult syrphid flies feed on nectar and pollen and also sometimes on honeydew from aphids. This is a female and may be planning on laying eggs in the aphid colony.
