Caddisfly, Order Trichoptera
But I don't know which genus, etc.

My comment must seem fairly ignorant... my apologies to "SnakeneckChris". I can only say in my defense that I've yet to actually see a caddisfly for myself. Still, that's no excuse -- time to go and study that section of BugGuide obviously!

This year was the first time I'd seen them. They definitely look a lot like moths.

Looks like a moth to me...
...but I'm (sadly) not much help beyond that point.
