Quite a beautiful dragonfly, resting on a warm rock in the late evening.

looks like a Mosaic Darner
Aeshna genus i think. Aeshna interrupta maybe ?
I'm not an expert in these by any means. Just an idea :)

Could be many of them.
Could be any number of the Aeshnas...I would not say down to species. We just cant see what we need to in this photo in order to get it down to species. From what I can see of the appendages it may be a female.

I would like to improve my insect photography
What types of views would you need to aid in identification? While not always possible on live specimens, I would like to know what kind of shots I should be taking. A side shot of this dragonfly would have been difficult given the circumstance as it was in an overhanging niche in a rock and I was looking up at it.

I would like to take better shots of my subjects.

I'm just starting to learn about
identifying dragonflies, but it seems like a clear side view is generally important for identifying darners (and probably dragonflies in general). Dragonflies are skittish and it may not be possible to get photos sufficient to ID each one. As a general rule, try to get as many different views as possible of whatever type of insect you're shooting, but check out this article for some more specific information about particular groups.
