beetle on fungus - Mycetophagus californicus

beetle on fungus - Mycetophagus californicus
along Highland Lakes Road, about halfway between lakes and Hwy 4, Alpine County, California, USA
June 14, 2009
I think this was around 5mm... On fungus underneath a rotting log.

very sweet! must be Mycetophagus californicus Horn
will have it checked

Moved from Beetles.

ID confirmed by A.R. Cline
his comment: "Now that's a nice beetle! Yep, it's M. californicus. The elytral fasciae are fairly characteristic for this species."

well... if this one is M. californicus...
...then what the @#$% is this???

I'll check the Essig collection
and see what I can find out there.

the image you link to...
...is M. pluriguttatus. The same image appears on the SBMNH site correctly labeled here.

Also I did check the Essig collection and my Mycetophagus is definitely californicus. The M. pluriguttatus specimens look like the one you link to.

cool -- thanks so much again, Joyce
i've had no doubts about Andy's ID, but that linked CA BP page surprised me, since their info is mostly sound
