Grasshopper on Cats-ear - Melanoplus angustipennis - female

Grasshopper on Cats-ear - Melanoplus angustipennis - Female
Beaver Dunes State Park, Beaver County, Oklahoma, USA
May 26, 2009
Seen in mid day in sand dunes.

I think it's a good place for now.
It probably never will be completely certain (rarely is with Melanoplus nymphs), but I'm not familiar with any other species in that area with nymphs that match so well as this one. We can pretty confidently eliminate short-winged species just by the size of the wing pads.

Most similar are probably M. packardii and M. foedus, which are closely related, but I don't think it's either one of those, and guestimating the size from the flower, I'd be inclined to say this one is too small for those. M. foedus does share a preference for sandy habitats.

Dave, it seemed like you were certain enough that it would be educational to have this image on the species page, but if you feel more comfortable with it being placed here with the other unidentified nymphs, let me know and I'll move it.

It's a female third instar nymph
of Melanoplus, and based on where taken and habitat, I'd say it's almost a sure thing that it's M. angustipennis (but not 100% certain).

Compare with these on Pfadt's Fact Sheets.
