Catalpa sphinx? - Ceratomia catalpae

Catalpa sphinx? - Ceratomia catalpae
Nashville, Tennessee, USA
July 7, 2008
Guess I'd better double-check this one, since the last one was rejected...

Moved
Moved from Sphinx Moths. Thanks Ryan--I guess maybe the question is, how do you distinguish it for sure from the Waved Sphinx? There's an image of Robin McLeod's that has been sitting at genus level for over a year, asking this question.

Catalpa sphinx caterpillars were certainly abundant in the general area where I saw these.

Sphinx
If the catalpa horworms were abundant than that is more evidence of this being a catalpa as well. The waved sphinx has more distinguished "waved" lines while the catalpa sphinx has less distinguishable lines on the forewings and an overall more brownish coloration.

Yes
Ceratomia catalpae, the other one you posted was a catalpa sphinx, I don't know why it wasn't moved to that page.
