Grasshopper from Hawaii - female

Grasshopper from Hawaii - Female
Maui County, Hawaii, USA
April 16, 2009
This was found in a dry area somewhere between 500-1000' above sea level on the northwest part of the island.

There don't seem to be many published photos of this species,
however, here are closely related species O. decorus (from Europe) posted on Flickr, and O. australis on the Australian Govt. Dept. of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Locust site.

Moved from ID Request.

This would appear to be
a last instar female nymph of Oedaleus abruptus in tribe Locustini of the subfamily Oedipodinae of family Acrididae. It is an Asian species by origin, established on most of the Hawaiian Islands. Species of this tribe (especially the nymphs) look a lot like many members of the subfamily Gomphocerinae, and can be easily confused.

There is a little information here: Bishop Museum - Arthropod Checklist [The State Museum of Natural and Cultural History, Honolulu, Hawaii].
