Machimus? - Philonicus fuscatus - male

Machimus? - Philonicus fuscatus - Male
Mount Sugarloaf State Reserve, South Deerfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts, USA
August 1, 2009
I believe these two images are of the same specimen, in leaf litter on a sunlit spot of the forest floor.

Moved
Moved from Robber Flies.

I've never seen this species before,
but from the description in the key in Hine, I believe it to be Philonicus fuscatus, which features, among other things, male genitalia with a visible open space in the middle when viewed from the top (a typical Philonicus feature), black femora, and largely red tibiae and tarsi.
