Coelopa vanduzeei

Coelopa vanduzeei
Ano Nuevo State Reserve, San Mateo County, California, USA
September 20, 2009
Photographed on a long rock ledge about 10 feet above sea level, where freshwater seepage mixed with saltwater from the splash-zone had ponded. This gave rise to an overflowing growth of bacteria and/or algae...where this creature was found perching.

A bizarre looking flattened, bristly, and leathery looking "kelp fly", not related to the "common kelp flies" in the genus Fucellia.
