Tiny bugs in sink - Entomobrya atrocincta - female

Tiny bugs in sink - Entomobrya atrocincta - Female
Fountain Valley, Orange County, California, USA
December 20, 2009
Size: < 1mm
Tiny, almost microscopic bug I found crawling inside my kitchen sick. There were several others, all about the same size. At first it looked like a moving speck of dust.

Moved from Entomobrya nr nigrocincta.

For the rationale behind this move, please see the discussion under the image below:

Moved from Springtails and allies.

Here is an example of one of the adult males of this species, which Frans mentioned you might want to be on the lookout for:

Entomobrya atrocincta
A female specimen.
You might want to look for the males: they are more orange with a distinct transverse white followed by black thoracic band.

Moved from ID Request.

Elongate-bodied Springtail
Here's some info. on them - Order Entomobryomorpha
Welcome to Bugguide!

for more information you can see the general springtail page here. I'll move your photos to the springtail section, where our expert will see them and will probably be able to tell you more precisely what kind this is.

that was quick!
I have a variety of bugs that have invaded the house, would be nice to have a digital microscope to catalog them :)

Household bugs
Maybe you will find some of them here.

Those springtails are neat-looking creatures. I'm envious of the folks who have the lenses to do them justice!
