Mystery Ohio Beetle - Lycoptis americana

Mystery Ohio Beetle - Lycoptis americana
Rushville, Perry County, Ohio, USA
February 8, 2008
Size: 2.1mm
Here's a very nice beetle that I thought was a Colydiidae when I collected them...but I don't think so. Collected under dead Hickory bark near the tree base. Antenna quite distinct with I believe 8 segments and a tight one or two segmented club, large first segment, big second segment and long 3rd segment. Bug is covered with erect seta including the antennal club. Any thoughts before I run it through the family key?

Ohio Mystery No More!
Michael, Sweet! you nailed it. You guys are awesome and this site is a real gem for those of us working on these small fry. Who would have thunk a 2 mm Trogositidae? Beats slogging through the family keys, and lord knows what I would have come up with in doing that. Let me know if you want a couple specimens I'd be happy to send them for the det.

Thanks so much,

Ken

Great!
Love to have a specimen or two from your part of the country. You can get my mailing address through the website on my profile. Thanks.

wow -- thanks, Mike!!! what a beetle...
lophocaterid gestalt did cross my mind at some point but i rejected the idea as weird...

pls provide actual date, too, 'kay?
[now it's the silly default showing]

holy... matrimony... how could i miss this one?
it does look quite like a small synchitine, but the pubescence...
ANY chance to get a sharper photo so i could show it around?
and goodness'sake spare yourself the torture of running beetles thru family keys

Ahh...I am surprised! Well I don't feel so bad not recognizing this guy. At about 2 mm the photo is about at the limits of my camera but I will try and get better picture. I actually tried once on running this beetle through the key and gave up. Please let me know if there are any other features I could give that may help.

Mystery Ohio Beetle
I have posted another picture that I believe is an improvement. I can send a specimen(s) to someone to keep for determination if needed as I collected a series of 22 specimens. Hairy Cerylonidae?

interesting.
I'm not getting this one but I'm on the road, away from my ref. collection. I was just doing lots of Ohio Ciids so the furriness but not the antenna make me think of Cis. Could you do an underside? That can often help if the point isn't covering too much.

Mystery Ohio Beetle
Hi Rick, I added a picture of the venter. Hope this helps as I'm stumped. Your thoughts regarding it possibly being a Ciidae makes sense except the description mentions loose 2-3 segment club for this family and my beetle has a tight 1 or 2 segment club.

can't think of any ciid of similar habitus
the venter is way too flat

Mr. Belov,

Thank you so much for your assistance with this beetle determination. Nice to be able to add a new genus. This has turned out to be a wonderful site. Thanks again.

pleasure is all mine
i alerted Rich & Mike once i saw you pic -- and panicked :)

Mystery Ohio Beetle
I was shocked when it turned out to be a Trogositidae! at 2mm what the #@#!&

I love it! Your always a bit hesitant to post a bug your having trouble with as your sure someone will say "well it's obviously ________ because of ________ then you feel dopey. So it is refreshing to "stump the experts" so to speak once in awhile.

i live to be stumped
but hey, i started to familiarize with the New World fauna a year & a half ago
