What Kind Of Beetle? - Poecilocrypticus formicophilus

What Kind Of Beetle? - Poecilocrypticus formicophilus
Montrose, Laurens County, Georgia, USA
December 5, 2009
Size: 3+mm
I found this in the bark of a pine. It looks much like Cryptocephalus, but I can't find anything that visually matches it. Anyone familiar with this?

neat bug! thanx, Jon.
Moved from Beetles.

What a mouthful
for a name, but, utterly fascinating is its relation to the fire ant invasion. I surmise the flooding around here for the past week may be why I found it on the tree. All the ant nests have suffered real damage here and many made a run for it in the past few days. I probably would never have seen it otherwise.

for another mouthful check its tribal cousin
:-]

Whew!!
I can digest French and Spanish much more easily.
