This wasp was feeding at goldenrod late in the day; it's the only one like this I've ever seen.

This is a scoliid wasp, in the genus Scolia. Don't know which species.

it might be scolia dubia, possibly ardens? might have spelled it wrong

 
Triscolia ardens
This one looks like Triscolia ardens. You can just barely make out the third submarginal cell which sets apart T. ardens. I am not entirely sure of the modern taxonomy, so the genus might actually be Scolia.
